Swatch watch long store lines during EDC weekend at the Forum Shops: Here's what the hype is all about

Over 500,000 party-goers are descending on Las Vegas this weekend for EDC…one of the largest electronic music festivals in the world. The lights, the bass, the costumes. It's a spectacle unlike anything else. But this year, there's another kind of line forming in Las Vegas. And it's not at the festival gates.

The Swatch Store Line
Come Saturday morning, a crowd of watch enthusiasts…some of them fresh off a long night at EDC, some of them die-hard collectors who planned this trip specifically for this moment might be posted up outside the Swatch store at Caesars Forum Shops, all chasing one thing: the highly anticipated Audemars Piguet x Swatch Royal Oak.

The buzz is real. The hype is loud. And some people online are already claiming this watch will be worth over $5,000 on the secondary market.

Before you take out your credit card, let's talk about what history actually tells us.
The Watch That Started the Conversation: Blancpain x Swatch Scuba Fifty Fathoms
To understand where the AP x Swatch hype is headed, you need to look back at the collab that set the template, the Blancpain x Swatch Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms, released on September 9, 2023.

The collection was a celebration of the 70th anniversary of the iconic Blancpain Fifty Fathoms...a watch widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of the modern dive watch, released in 1953. The original Fifty Fathoms was groundbreaking: water-resistant, legible, and built for professional divers. Today, a genuine vintage Fifty Fathoms can command tens of thousands of dollars at auction, and modern references from Blancpain's collection routinely retail for well over $10,000.

So when Swatch announced a collaboration bringing that same design DNA to a $400 price point, the watch community went into a frenzy. Here was a chance to own a piece of horological history inspired by one of the greatest dive watches ever made for the price of a phone bill.
Lines formed around the block. People flew from across the country. Resellers were salivating. And yet, here we are nearly three years later and the Blancpain x Swatch Scuba Fifty Fathoms is still selling for around $400.

The lesson? The first wave of hype is always the loudest. It is rarely the most accurate.
So Why Is Everyone So Excited About the AP x Swatch?
Audemars Piguet's Royal Oak is one of the most iconic watch designs in history. Designed by Gerald Genta and launched in 1972, the Royal Oak revolutionized luxury watchmaking by introducing a sports watch crafted in stainless steel at a luxury price point. Its octagonal bezel, integrated bracelet, and "tapisserie" dial are instantly recognizable.
A standard Royal Oak from AP today retails for $25,000 to $35,000 and that's if you can even get one. Waitlists are long, allocations are limited, and the secondary market runs hot.

So the idea of an AP x Swatch Royal Oak at an accessible price point potentially in the $300–$400 range based on precedent is incredibly exciting. For many people, it would be the closest they'll ever get to owning a Royal Oak aesthetic on their wrist.
That excitement is completely understandable. The design pedigree is undeniable.
But excitement and investment value are two very different things.
The $5,000 Rumor: Where It Comes From and Why You Should Be Skeptical
Social media, particularly watch-focused communities on Reddit, Instagram, and YouTube has been buzzing with predictions that the AP x Swatch will hit $5,000 or more on the resale market. The logic goes something like this: AP is more exclusive than Blancpain, the Royal Oak is more recognizable than the Fifty Fathoms to a mainstream audience, and therefore demand will be higher and prices will follow.
The Right Reason to Buy a Swatch Collab
None of this is meant to discourage anyone from buying the AP x Swatch, or any Swatch collab for that matter. These are genuinely fun, well-made, beautifully designed watches that bring a touch of haute horlogerie to everyday life. The Bioceramic material Swatch uses is innovative. The design tributes are thoughtful. And at $400, the barrier to entry is low enough that this is an accessible luxury that's something to be worn, enjoyed, and appreciated.
The Blancpain x Swatch Scuba Fifty Fathoms is a great watch. If you love it, wear it diving, wear it to brunch, wear it to EDC. It will serve you well.
The AP x Swatch, when it arrives, will likely be the same story. A beautifully executed, culturally significant, genuinely enjoyable watch that makes you smile every time you look at your wrist.
That's worth $400.
Whether it's worth $5,000? The Fifty Fathoms collab already answered that question.
